The ZIVSIX

I was fortunate to get a meeting with Roy at NAMM 2024. That alone was special. A chance to say thank you. He's one of a couple players who kept me inspired during the covid-isolation years. We started talking ideas. And he wanted a short-scale bass that was different than what the market offered… and the answer was a resounding YES.

This is hardly a new idea, but we went back the drawing board with only three knowns: it had to have 6 strings, it had to be 30-inch scale, and it had to play the way he expected a guitar to play. That's the recipe.

Is it a bass guitar? Sorta...
Is it a baritone guitar? *shrugs in E standard*

Defining these things can be a bit circular. A baritone guitar is commonly accepted as a guitar of longer scale length so that it can be played at a lower pitch. This also defines a bass guitar. Baritones are most often tuned a fifth, fourth, or major third lower than the standard E2 of traditional guitar. And of course a traditional bass guitar is tuned an octave lower than E2. It's important to remember that these voicing classifications simply refer to the tonal range of the instrument - just like with vocalists. More importantly, there's your playing style and technique.

It's our take on a monster music maker. To know what "it is" you really have to play it.
